main object of veneration
- A buddha, bodhisattva, or maṇḍala that is used as an object of worship. When appearing externally, it is referred to as an "object of veneration with form" 有相本尊, while one that is generated in the mind of the practitioner is called an "object of veneration without form" 無相本尊. the sutras of Esoteric school 密教—the Mahāvairocana-sūtra 大日經 and the Yuzhi jing 瑜祗經—mention the main object of veneration, but the term has come to be used more generally to describe objects of veneration throughout the various schools of Buddhism. Although the Esoteric school views Mahāvairocana 大日如來 as the original 本尊, bodhisattvas and other deities have become objects of veneration that manifest one aspect of Mahāvairocana. Cf. 挾侍佛.
