Basic Meaning: six unconditioned [factors]
Senses:
Six cognitive factors within the Yogâcāra scheme of one hundred factors which are not karmically conditioned (Skt. ṣaḍ-asaṃskṛta). Factors which do not arise, abide, change, or disappear as do all other phenomena. These are:
- space (being without obstruction) as unconditioned 虛空無爲(虛空), which is thusness free from cognitive and afflictive obstructions.
- destruction of afflictions through analytical meditation as unconditioned 擇滅無爲(擇滅).
- cessation without analytical meditation as unconditioned 非擇滅無爲(非擇滅); this is cessation that occurs by the direct insight into the originally pure nature of thusness, which allows the freedom from all afflictions.
- motionlessness (or
'undisturbed'
) as unconditioned 不動無爲(不動),referring to the attainment of the fourth level of concentration 第四靜慮.
- concentration of cessation of sensation of perception as unconditioned 想受滅無爲(想受滅), that is, entry into the absorption of total annihilation of mental activity 滅盡定. The mental functions associated with the six consciousnesses are terminated.
- thusness as unconditioned 眞如無爲(眞如).
Each one of these is said to have two aspects: (1) being based on being brought into conscious awareness 依識變, referring to mental representation a dharma, the aspect of the unconditioned 無爲相, a simulacrum 相似, which is actually conditioned 實有爲; (2) being based on actuality 依法性, in which case it is real 眞理 and truly unconditioned 實無爲. See also 無爲.
