Vimalakīrti-nirdeśa-sūtra
- Weimo jing. This scripture is considered one of the most profound, as well as literarily excellent of the Indian Mahāyāna sūtras. The sutra expounds the deeper principle of Mahāyāna as opposed to lesser vehicle teachings, focusing on the explication of the meaning of nonduality. A significant aspect of the scripture is the fact that it is a teaching addressed to high-ranking Buddhist disciples through the mouth of the layman bodhisattva Vimalakīrti, who expounds the doctrine of emptiness in depth, eventually resorting to silence. There are three translations extant: the Weimojie suoshuo jing 維摩詰所說經 (trans. Kumārajīva 鳩摩羅什; T 475.14.537a-557b), the Shuo wugoucheng jing 說無垢稱經 (6 fasc. trans. Xuanzang 玄奘; T 476.14.557–587) and the Weimojie jing 維摩詰經 (2 fasc. trans. Zhi Qian 支謙; T 474.14.519–536). In addition to these, earlier translations had been done by Zhi Qian 支謙 (223–228), Dharmarakṣa 竺法護 (308), Upaśūnya 月婆首那 (545), and Jñānagupta 闍那崛多 (591). Of the three extent renditions, Kumārajīva's has traditionally been the most popular. Important East Asian commentaries on the sutra include the Weimo yiji 維摩義記 by Huiyuan 慧遠, the Weimojing xuanshu 維摩經玄疏 by Zhiyi 智顗, and the Weimojing yishu 維摩經義疏 by Jizang 吉藏. Charles Luk translated the Kumārajīva version into English, as did Richard Robinson (unpublished); Robert Thurman translated from the Tibetan, taking advantage of Robinson's rendition from Chinese; Burton Watson (1997) also translated the Kumārajīva version. Lamotte took all editions, including Xuanzang's, into account in his translation of Vimalakīrti into French (Lenseignement de Vimalakīrti, 1962); his version has been translated into English by Sara Boin (PTS, 1976). Most recently, John McRae translated the Kumārajīva version for the BDK series. [resp. Charles Muller, Dan Lusthaus; ref. Hirakawa, JEBD, Yokoi, Iwanami]
