Sengzhao
- (384–414?) A scholar-monk of the latter Qin. According to the Gaoseng zhuan, he was born to a poor family in Jingzhao 京兆, and he learned the classics at an early ago while working as a copyist. At first he was drawn to the works of Zhuangzi and Laozi, but upon reading the Vimalakīrti-nirdeśa-sūtra, he began to study Buddhism. He then went to become a student of the famous exegete and translator Kumārajīva 鳩摩羅什, eventually gaining prominence as one of Kumārajīva's chief disciples. As a student of Kumārajīva, he worked with him on his translation projects, but he also wrote a number of his own treatises on topics such as prajñā, emptiness and nirvāṇa, the most well-known being the Zhao lun 肇論. He also composed prefaces to the Vimalakīrti-sūtra 維摩詰經序、Longer Āgama Sutra 長阿含經序, and the Bai lun 百論序. He is apocryphally attributed with the authorship of the Baozang lun 寶藏論. As for his death, the early biographies only mention that he passed away in 414 at the age of thirty-one, but later Chan materials suggest that he was executed for some unspecified transgression.
