thinking consciousness that arises with the five sense consciousnesses
- The thinking (mano) consciousness operates concomitantly with the sense consciousnesses, for example, when helping to more precisely cognize the sense object. It is quite normal for us to use our sense consciousnesses and thinking consciousnesses in tandem in the course of our daily lives when various conjectures and intentions are mixed together with sensory perceptions. In this circumstance the thinking consciousness that arises in tandem with the sense consciousnesses is distinguished into two further types: (a) the thinking consciousness that has the same objects as the sense consciousness 五同緣意識, and (b) the thinking consciousness that does not have the same objects 不同緣意識. This form of the mano is distinguished from that where it does not arise concomitantly with the five sense consciousnesses 不倶意識. One of the four variations of the thinking consciousness 四種意識. 〔成唯識論 〕 [resp. Charles Muller]
